Introducing a Puppy

Got a new puppy? Be sure to support him when introducing him to the current pack.

Elevate your puppy, so he can see who is coming to check him out. This will also help you check out the older dogs' responses. You want to avoid a fearful experience for your new puppy, so safety is a priority.

Lower the puppy part way down and gauge the older dog's response by watching for body tension (you want to see looseness) tail position (midline or lower) and ear carriage (forward is okay, but tight is not). If there are any signs that the older dog will be inappropriate, stop the introduction. Here, Penny, the Vizsla, looks soft and willing to make a friend.

Gently place the puppy on the ground, but remain available for support. Here, Seagram decides that under mom is a good place to be checked out by Penny.

Supervise early interactions carefully! Stay close and be willing to intervene on puppy's behalf. Watch for uneasy body language. Here, Seagram is uncomfortable, but trying to send the right signals. His ears are flapped open and his paw raised, both appeasement signs. Penny is behaving appropriately, gently sniffing the puppy and wiggling her tail low. Rough-housing at this point would be too scary for the puppy.

It won't take long for everyone to relax if introductions are managed carefully...
